With the Covid-19 pandemic it’s really messed our event calendar up. It really got us thinking about what we could and could not do during the lockdown.
As usual we like to think a little out of the box. We’ve noticed there’s been a rise in popularity in ‘virtual’ events. A lot of what participation sports is about the shared experience of doing the same thing with like minded people. We wondered how we could adapt this to our events but maintain a degree of social distancing.
What we have come up with is the Secret Sortie. Drawing on the popularity of our routes on the Velotastic and Peak District Gravel Bike Guide sites, we feel our idea is a little bit special.
Like most events the Secret Sortie has an entry cut off time – July 31st at 12 noon. Pay your entry fee between now and then and when the entries close we’ll email you a link to a top secret page on Ride with GPS with a route on it. Once you’ve got the route you’re free to follow it whenever is convenient for you.
This route has not appeared on any of our sites and has been designed especially for this event. It starts at Fox House on the edge of Sheffield and is roughly 100 km long and around 1800 metres of climb. It follows our normal event format – it’s a big day out taking in a mix of bridleways, white roads and quiet lanes in the Peak District. Don’t expect flat and boring – if you’ve ever ridden one of our events you know we don’t do that.
Not only that, but all entrants will get a very special Secret Sortie patch to sew on to whatever you like. This will be delivered late August / early September once we know how many we need to order.
It goes without saying that if you do enter not only will you make our day, but you will do so at your own risk and we’re not responsible if you get yourself into a bit of a tangle.
Don’t forget to share your adventures using the hashtags #velotastic and #secretsortie !
