Vlaanderen or Flanders in northern Belgium is one of cycling’s spiritual heartlands. With pan-flat terrain interspersed with short sharp climbs and a wind that blows straight down off the North Sea from the Arctic, it is easy to see why the area has produced some of cycling’s hard men or ‘flahute’.
